The idea of a typical gym weights session followed by time-consuming cardio bores most people to tears and you would rather watch paint dry. But summer is here and you want to look good in that cute Victoria Secret bikini you just bought! The struggle is real...what to do...gym boredom vs the cute bikini - first world problem right here, but none the less a problem!
Now complaining about a problem without posing a solution is called whining, as Theodore Roosevelt puts it, but that is not what we are here to do, therefore I propose a solution and it is called HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). This solution solves all gym boredom issues and it will get you all excited as if you came home and your boyfriend did all the house chores without being reminded!
I digress, what is this HIIT you ask...well it is Interval training that consists of a short period of high intensity activity followed by a recovery period of lower intensity activity, repeated several times.
I personally swear by Interval Training, when I get bored of training separate muscle groups at the gym, I turn to interval training to spice things up a little. When I am time restricted, I turn to interval training because it gives me more results in less time and helps me burn more calories both during and after exercise (how awesome is that!). I don’t know about you, but I personally dread the idea of getting on the treadmill or the bike or the Stairmaster (I have a love/hate relationship with this machine) in the gym, but then HIIT comes to the rescue and takes my cardio to the next level. Another huge bonus of HIIT is there are no equipment necessary - high knees, jumping jacks or anything plyometric like jumping lunges, get your heart rate up just as much as biking, jump roping and rowing. Don’t believe me, try doing 30 seconds of each burpees, high knees, plyometric squats, push ups and box jumps...your inability to say anything without huffing and puffing your lungs out is all the proof I need. I once challenged my boyfriend who is a regular gym goer and a “do you even lift bro” types, to one of my HIIT sessions and he only just scrapped through to the finish line.
HIIT has to be one of the best styles of training I have come across. If you do a fifteen minute calorie-blasting routine you will be feeling it in your whole body. Try a HIIT workout post this very decadent festive season and you will see the extra Easter kilos melt away and your body will love you for this.
